TRIZ India

For those who seriously think HOW to innovate

I had recently been to a star hotel in Chennai
(Name not revealed as it a public blog)
This was where I was staying when attending a workshop

The hotel room was good but what triggered me the most was the shower

It took me close to 10-15 mins to know how to operate it
And operating it left water spraying from all different unexpected corners

How does one identify function of each of the ten knobs?
How to get simple functionality was made literally impossible.

The last to expect was that there was no simple outlet to fill a
bucket even if I wanted

Finally if one does manage to operate the shower then one can have a
fancy shower with water jets from 6 different jets.
But if one wanted a normal simple shower one is left puzzling

I wonder how somebody advanced in age would learn to operate it

This left me thinking can this be considered Innovation, Or could one take this
example as what Innovation should not lead to?

Hi Kumar,

Thanks for the interesting post, and for the picture too. The concept of "Design" innovation is getting little too much now, and the shower is an example. Well, I don't say this is not what "innovation lead to", because this shower offers more functions than a normal shower. However, the flaw is when the "interface" to achieve the functions are not user friendly, and this is an area designers (or innovators?) are not focusing on, or rather taking granted. Very interesting read for this is the book by Don Norman, "The design of every day things". He is one of my favorite author and thinker on the User Interface design. You can also check some interesting video from Don (I will be posting that here in TRIZ India)

I was trying to experiment a concept called Ideal Final Interface where we can use TRIZ concepts to design user interface (or no User Interface)

Do comment, and keep posting interesting examples like this.

Best,
Prakash
